The Venerable Viola

Bratsche’s Viola Bazaar - it’s where GearGems.com all began! In 2004, I saw a need, and filled it. That need? Violists had virtually no designs to call our own. Accustomed to being the butt of rude Viola Jokes was one thing, but having no threads to strut our stuff was the utimate slap in the face! So when I first discovered the world of Print-on-Demand, I created and uploaded designs, one by one. And the reaction of viola players worldwide egged me on! Clearly I was doing something right! So I kept it up. And the rest, as they say, is history!

We have begun to put some of these designs at our PrintFection and Zazzle stores, and all of them (pictured below) can be purchased through our CafePress store. (See notes on the differences on available products in the Print-On-Demand Companies article. And, of course, if you see a product you’d like somewhere that hasn’t yet got the design you’re looking for, just let us know and we’ll get it up there for you ASAP!)

Do you play mandolin? Or guitar? Or even other lesser known plucked instruments like the cittern, bouzouki, or mandola? You’ll want to read about our hand-crafted ivory picks! When I first started to play the mandolin and mandola a few years back (not professionally, but just for fun), I found that I was unhappy playing with the commercial plastic picks that were available out there. Being a (somewhat) crafty sort, I began experimenting with making my own picks from antique elephant ivory. People close to me tried them and were enthusiastic about the tone quality they produced, so I decided to make them available for special order through the Web.

Soon afterward, I figured they needed some special designs to accompany them! Here are some available through CafePress and through Zazzle.

Cat lovers all know what that means. Or they should! We currently have nine felines sharing our living space with us - and it is pure joy! Well, okay, there is a fair amount of chaos mixed in, but that is all part of the fun for a true ailurophile! Our cats, both past and present, have provided us with countless laughs, occasional tears, and numerous photo ops; and as such, they have been prominently featured in our Ailurophilia! department. I confess - ever since I was little, I’ve been a rockhound! I’d often be ignorant of the scenery around me - because my eyes were on the ground, enticed by that sparkly chunk of granite by the pathway… fast forward several decades, and I even made time to join my local Gem and Mineral Society for a while, so I could learn to cut cabochons! (I still hope to do more of that some day!)

Print-On-Demand Companies, a/k/a “PODs”, are the companies who do all the “drudgery” work that frees up designers to just, well… design!

While GearGems 100% creates the designs we sell to you, we do not print them ourselves - that’s where POD companies enter the picture. We deal only with fulfillment companies that have excellent quality printing and can get your order to you quickly, and who stand behind their work with an unconditional guarantee.

That said, each POD company has its own slightly different inventory of products on which to print, pricing structure and other differences. GearGems began using CafePress when there were no other viable PODs. Because of this, our store at CafePress has more designs available. We are working to catch up at Zazzle and PrintFection.

GearGems at CafePress offers, in addition to its t-shirt and apparel array, mugs, clocks, bags, ceramic tile items, throw pillows, buttons, magnets, teddy bears, license plate frames, SIGG bottles, and even FlipMino and FlipMinoHD camcorders, with our exclusive designs.

GearGems at Zazzle, while having fewer non-apparel items than at CafePress, offers a wider selection of apparel from which to choose. If you click on a shirt link on a Zazzle product, you are actually able to select other available shirt styles as well as colors, and, in some cases, to personalize them yourself.

Possibly the most attractive feature of GearGems at PrintFection is that in addition to an extensive variety of available apparel, there are t-shirts up to 4XL in size. And the images are printed larger on them than on the other PODs’ apparel, too, so they won’t “get lost” on our plus-sized customers!
